Preserving Elegance: How to Care for Your Custom Shirts

EN | ES

At Gentl Supply, we craft our shirts using exceptionally fine European cottons and linens. Because these natural fibers breathe and drape so beautifully, they deserve a gentle, conscious approach to cleaning. Aggressive chemical stain removers or harsh washing cycles can break down the natural fibers and fade colors over time.

Here is our master guide to keeping your shirts pristine all year long:

1. The Real Culprits: SPF and Deodorants

Sunscreen Marks: SPF products often contain oils and minerals (like zinc oxide or avobenzone, and many other) that react with water and fabric, creating yellowish halos. Always allow your sunscreen to fully absorb into your skin for 10–15 minutes before putting on your shirt.

Underarm Stains: Yellowing isn't caused by sweat alone, but by the reaction between aluminum in antiperspirants and natural body proteins. Switching to an aluminum-free deodorant significantly reduces staining.

2. Spot Treatment Before Washing

Never throw a stained shirt directly into the washing machine without pre-treating:

The Gentle Method: Apply a small amount of liquid Marseille soap (or a mild pH-neutral liquid detergent) directly onto the dry collar, cuffs, or underarms. Gently rub the fabric against itself using your fingers—never use a stiff brush, as it damages fine cotton weaves.

Natural Brightening: For white shirts, a solution of lukewarm water and baking soda applied as a paste over the stain for 20 minutes works wonders without bleaching the natural fibers. You can also use one of Oxy detergent booster according to their spot treatment instructions.

3. Wash Cool, Hang Smart

Temperature Matters: Wash your shirts at 30°C on a delicate cycle with low spin (400–600 RPM) to minimize creasing and increase the garment longevity.

Air Drying: Always air-dry your shirts on a wooden or padded hanger, buttoned at the top to retain the collar’s natural shape. Avoid direct, intense sunlight on dark or linen shirts to prevent color fading.

Taking a few extra minutes to care for your garments ensures they maintain their fit, texture, and crispness season after season.
